malin and me

The evening of January first…. I was lying in bed feeling sick, when Malin decided to join me. It was late, I was sick, she should have been tired, but…. instead, the girl was full of questions. Like:

When was God created?

Why did God create Satan?

And many, many more in that line of thought. Then we came to this bit of conversation:

Malin: …and God is the most important thing to everybody. Except robbers.
Me: (because what else would I have said?) Yeah.
Malin: Do we have a police station in our town?
Me: There’s one in Jackson and one in Hazard.
Malin: Well, maybe we could go down sometime and check out all the robbers.
Me: Why would you want to do that?
Malin: I just think it would be cool to see if we recognize any of them.

About ruthie.voth

Wife of one, mother of four, friend of many. Lover of details, color, good conversations, finding balance, and being honest. Passionate lover of a well-crafted sentence - even more so if it's witty. Weird blend of cynical optimist. I'm the worst kind of woman. I'm high maintenance, but I think I'm low maintenance. Somehow, people still love me. Must be grace.

  1. I almost spit my milk out when I read that last line. It totally caught me off guard.

Oh, children are so wise. Because you never really know people do you? We might be surprised to find out who the robbers are!

I remember hearing some advice once, if ever accosted by a robber, one should ask, “Don’t I know your mother?” Because wicked as they are, they ought to know better than to disappoint their mother!
