-from booklovers everywhere-

You see me sitting here with my nose in a book, mindlessly wasting an evening on a made-up story. There can’t be any value in a novel, right? I should be doing something useful with my time. But you’re only seeing a small part of the picture…

When I read, I’m studying language, character development and plot formation. I am learning the art of memorable speech. I’m critiquing dialogue, picking up on subtle innuendos, reading between the lines. I’m learning to interpret thoughts behind the spoken word. I am challenging my own belief system, constantly refining my definition of truth. I’m getting to know, on a very personal level, people of different races, cultures, ages, time periods. I’m learning history, imagining possible futures, and discerning patterns of human behavior that remain unchanged over centuries. I’m being constantly reminded that every action brings consequences. Line by line, I’m unraveling the mystery of the collective human psyche. I am figuring out how your mind works and the best way to respond to you in any given situation. I am giving myself an education and a valuable gift.

And you think I’m just reading a book.

About ruthie.voth

Wife of one, mother of four, friend of many. Lover of details, color, good conversations, finding balance, and being honest. Passionate lover of a well-crafted sentence - even more so if it's witty. Weird blend of cynical optimist. I'm the worst kind of woman. I'm high maintenance, but I think I'm low maintenance. Somehow, people still love me. Must be grace.
