-midway through a long hike-

midway through a long hike

when you stepped off
the trail,
I thought you were lost.

time passed;
I kept following the signs,
and gradually
came to realize (from the nearby crashing in the underbrush)
that what I thought was your willing demise
was maybe
just a detour
-an exploratory jaunt on a branch of the main path-
and you haven’t abandoned the destination.

we’ll see.

Sometimes I think I understand other people’s souls better than I actually do. Occasionally I’m reminded of the truth – that there are pictures too big for me to comprehend, and the human soul is one of them.

About ruthie.voth

Wife of one, mother of four, friend of many. Lover of details, color, good conversations, finding balance, and being honest. Passionate lover of a well-crafted sentence - even more so if it's witty. Weird blend of cynical optimist. I'm the worst kind of woman. I'm high maintenance, but I think I'm low maintenance. Somehow, people still love me. Must be grace.

    Thanks, Ruthie. That is a good reminder that things are not always as they seem to our limited and finite eyes. Daddy
