Silently

There is a window in a room
A chair looks out at the view
That’s bigger – than she can imagine
And there behind her on the floor
Lies a broken harpsichord
In stained glass shadows, fading nightly
And in the doorway stands a boy
Stray beams of sunlight tangled in his curls,
But when he smiles and starts to speak
She turns silently away

        chorus:
        She never found her voice
In all those years she sat alone
She never did make a sound
That was really worth listening to
        She wasted away…

As evening settles, darkness falls
The firelight flickers, a mocking Chanticleer
Her writing stops, the pencil drops
Rolls to join the endless,
Useless, crumpled paper trail
With every page there is a memory
That unwelcome boy was always close at hand
But every time he tried to speak
She turned silently away

So close the curtains, stoke the fire
Drape a blanket over her
The cashmere is soft on her skin
Leave the room, and still she’ll sit
Resting in silence, waiting
In futile dreams of hopefulness
Maybe the next time he appears
Stray beams of sunlight tangled in his curls
When he smiles and starts to speak…
Oh….

Asleep in the firelight,
Who sees how she glows?
Just two eyes that mirror her soul,
And one quiet voice that she’s never known
She’s never recognized
She’s never recognized…
